Digital Locker is one of the key initiatives under the Digital India Programme. A beta version (http://digitallocker.gov.in) of the same has been released on 10th Feb. 2015, by Department of Electronics and Information Technology (DeitY), Govt. of India.

Digital Locker is aimed at minimizing the usage of physical documents and enable sharing of e-documents across agencies. The sharing of the e-documents will be done through registered repositories thereby ensuring the authenticity of the documents online. Residents can also upload their own electronic documents and digitally sign them using the e-sign facility. These digitally signed documents can be shared with Government organizations or other entities.

Key features of the Digital Locker System are:

• 10 MB of free space in digital locker to residents to access their documents through Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) and also securely store e-documents.
• e-sign online service to digitally sign documents

Residents are invited to use the Beta version of the Digital Locker System and provide suggestions and feedback on the same. Suggestions are also invited on the use cases for services which can be additionally provided by the Digital Locker System.

Basically, login must be based on OTP and Aadhar (Two-Factor Authentication). Most sensitive data will be encrypted with a key, key intself will be encrypted with a Public Key linked to Aadhar. A user can download their Private Keys if they login through Aadhar. These keys will have a time-bound validity. Then End-to-End encryption can be performed.

Its an amazing portal. Just concerned about security of the portal. It seems like government is planning JAM trinity for this purpose as well. Worried that what will happen if someone changes the phone number without making corresponding changes in AADHAR. So its important that it should become mandatory to provide AADHAR number to have connection.

its very nice move by the govt of India. but i have one suggestion that the govt should take some serious steps regarding paper less transaction in govt offices then only this digital locker can be used properly or else there is no use of holding digital documents when the govt officials every time ask for copies of documents.

A very good step but there are some problems that i and i thing many others face.
1. Every time i try to login to my locker, it shows ' please enter valid characters'. I gave a feedback regarding this but no reply from there.
2. 10 MB is vey less space.
3. Now every time i open the website it shows ' security certificate not valid'.
Please resolve these problems.

Nice initiative. I want to introduce this service to common man through the media with article.
My issue is: https://digilocker.gov.in/ is not accessible as it throws Privacy error. Screen-shot attached. It shows URL is not trusted. Please check and rectify this issue.
Best regards
