India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

The govt should appoint district disaster cells & include people from all skill- health, public mobilization, besides keeping it a govt. affair, and let all know what to do in a disaster like- riot, flood, earthquake, building collapse etc

Interconnecting Rivers, If we start linking all the rivers in India, there will be no drought in Tamil Nadu and there will be no flood in Odisha or Bihar every year. This requires huge effort and money, but once implemented, disaster management efforts will be very minimal.

Disaster Management : "Natural phenomena" : Certain places in India are prone to more rain and flood, these are expected and only on some rare cases it goes out of control. In India, there is flood in one part of the country and drought in another part. If we have a mechanism to divert the flooded water to these drought regions, we are saving many people\crops without washing away and in the same time, saving the drought region to grow crops. And this can Happen only by inter connecting rivers.

Hi Sir,
Govt should include 'Defense and security'as a new sector in ''Make in india'' and in 'MSME'.They should motivate and support enthusiastic youths to develop
Private Security Agencies. It will create job for youth belongs to rural areas and specially for those, who have been rejected by some minor reasons in army/para-military/or state police recritement.
if we are following developed economies, than we need to take massive action towords it along with an updated and strong PSA policy.

Weight is a major penalty. People have to be apprised that higher the weight of the structure, higher is the seismic force and devastation. Light construction concepts should be spread for earthquake prone and even floods and tsunami effected areas. these save on materials, labour, energy, cost and carbon foot print also.
