The role of institutions of higher education in societal development is becoming increasing significant. In recent years, higher education has isolated itself from the society and there is a need to re-establish and strengthen higher education’s close linkages with the society. How can Universities foster social responsibility and engage in community outreach programmes. Sharing some working examples would also be a useful input.

College and School Principals need to be compulsorily asked to attend courses on how to manage their institution. Our experience says most have forgotten simple HR skills, documentation skills and are responding only to queries that flow down from the DPIs and University/Boards.

Scientific temper needs to be embedded in all course content. Even in courses dealing with religion, culture, society. After all, scientific temper is about a. systematic study; b. evidence based learning; c. experiment based testing of ideas. This should be part of ALL courses.
