A Geographical Indication (GI) is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory. Handicrafts and industrial goods originating from a particular territory are an integral part of India’s cultural and collective intellectual heritage which need to be protected. Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact of its origin in that defined geographical locality.
Some of the examples of registered Indian GIs are Darjeeling Tea, Tirupathi Laddu, Kangra Paintings, Nagpur Orange, etc.
Complete list of all GIs can be viewed here. http://www.ipindia.nic.in/registered-gls.htm
The promotion of GIs is in line with the Government of India’s ‘Make in India’ campaign. GI tag has accorded protection to a number of hand-made and manufactured products, protecting our culture and supplementing the income of our rural artisans across the country. In this regard, DIPP, through the Cell for IPR Promotion & Management (CIPAM), a professional body under its aegis, is taking up various initiatives for promoting awareness and outreach on GIs. DIPP will launch a suitable tagline/slogan for promotion of GIs. In this regard, entries are invited to suggest a suitable slogan/tagline GIs of India.
The slogan/tagline should be attractive and represent the GIs of India. The winning entry will be awarded an amount of Rs 50,000/- (Rupees Fifty Thousand only)
