A Geographical Indication (GI) is primarily an agricultural, natural or a manufactured product (handicrafts and industrial goods) originating from a definite geographical territory. Handicrafts and industrial goods originating from a particular territory are an integral part of India’s cultural and collective intellectual heritage which need to be protected.
Typically, such a name conveys an assurance of quality and distinctiveness which is essentially attributable to the fact of its origin in that defined geographical locality.
Some of the examples of registered Indian GIs are Darjeeling Tea, Tirupathi Laddu, Kangra Paintings, Nagpur Orange, etc. Complete list of all GIs can be viewed here. http://www.ipindia.nic.in/registered-gls.htm
Why register GIs?
• It provides legal protection to GIs in India which in turn boost exports.
• It prevents unauthorized use of registered GIs by others.
• It promotes the economic prosperity of makers of GI products.
The Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, will launch a certifying GI mark/logo that can be used to identify all registered GIs irrespective of the categories.
In this regard, Cell for IPR Promotion and Management under the aegis of DIPP, invites entries to design a logo/ a certifying mark for GIs of India.
The logo should be attractive and represent the GIs of India. The winning entry will be awarded an amount of Rs 50,000/- (Rupees Fifty Thousand only)
