With this wastewater from the tanneries come extremely toxic, hazardous chemicals, such as chromium VI, methane, arsenic, cadmium, mercury, nickel, sulfuric acid, chemical dyes, and other heavy metals. These chemicals are known to cause a whole host of problems for humans, ranging from kidney failure to brain damage to lung cancer to spontaneous abortions.

One industry that is heavily polluting the Ganga is Kanpur’s 250+ tanneries. These tanneries are required to do preliminary cleaning of their wastewater before channeling the water into government-run waste treatment facilities, however many tanneries ignore the regulation as it is not cost-effective for them to do so.

the city produces 350 million liters of domestic sewage as well as nine million liters of industrial waste, mostly consisting of wastewater from tanneries. Fecal coliform counts in the Ganga far exceed what is acceptable for bathing or drinking. Many sewer lines dump directly into Ganga without being treated first, and lines being directed towards treatment plants often become clogged and overflow, running down the streets of

There is a slight confusion as everyone is saying sewage should be treated before draining in ganga. If the sewage is properly treated, the treated water is fit for drinking. So it will be waste to dump it anywhere. This should be sold to industries or used for agriculture purposes. We can built sewer lines around every city and divert it to the stp's or we can built it along the ganga on both sides to keep the sewage water seperate from main flow and can be cleaned at stp's

All the drains at Haridwar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Varanasi and Patna add zero-oxygen water into High Oxygen Ganga water. Therefore at point of drainwater ingress in river in all these cities imparts black colour and bad odour to the Ganga water. Therefore, in addition to extensive work of CPCB and publishing the report on pollution assessment of Ganga River, there is need to undertake diagnostic analysis of Ganga Pollution. Government of India, Ministry of Rivers can take up this activity.

At Varanasi : unbriddled construction activity on the near the banks of ganga will ultimately add pressure on garbage and sewerage disposal.

Construction activity all along the course of the Ganga and its tributaries should be tightly regulated by promulgamating a law akin to CRZ.

Most of us are already aware on the problems faced in maintaining Ganga's hygiene near the cities touching Ganga. We have pin pointed all areas which really need attention. A brainstorming is needed to overcome these root causes. I live in Prayag, the second-oldest city in India, and plays a central role in Hindu scriptures. The condition of holy river is going to be worst here as well. I believe we should identify the foremost causes which are playing a vital role in this. Attaching below.
