Established in 1875, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) is completing 150 years of service to the nation on 15th January 2025. IMD is among the earliest government departments created specifically for systematic observation, regular reporting and scientific forecasting of weather phenomenon in the Indian subcontinent. In a way, the evolution of meteorology as a stream of modern physical science owes a lot to the contributions made by scientists and technologists who were associated with IMD during its glorious one hundred and fifty years of journey.
The beginnings of meteorology in India can be traced to ancient times. Early philosophical writings of the 3000 B.C. era, such as the Upanishads, contain serious discussions about the processes of cloud formation and rain and the seasonal cycles caused by the movement of the earth around the sun. Meteorology, as we perceive it now, may be said to have had its firm scientific foundation in the 17th century after the invention of the thermometer and the barometer and the formulation of laws governing the behaviour of atmospheric gases. In 1875, the government of India established the India Meteorological Department, which brought all meteorological work in the country under a central authority.
To commemorate our remarkable 150-year journey of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, we proudly announce IMD’s Poster Making Contest in collaboration with MyGov to foster greater citizen engagement and awareness. This interactive initiative aims to inspire creativity while highlighting the critical role IMD plays in the lives of Indian citizens. By participating, young minds will gain insights into IMD's contributions to society and have the chance to express innovative ideas on how the department can further support the nation. This fun and enriching experience will help build a more informed and resilient community while encouraging youth to connect with IMD's mission meaningfully.
