Varanasi has often been termed as the cradle of India’s culture. It is a city of scholars, writers, poets and thinkers. The Ganga flows through Varanasi but sadly even here the Ganga’s condition has become pitiable. This task seeks your ideas on a comprehensive plan to clean the Ganga in Varanasi and at the same time a re-development plan for the Ghats of the city.
This concept paper is a result of a (5+5 hours) brainstorming session by its two authors. Acknowledging that there are many further ideas that can and need to be integrated within in a comprehensive plan for cleaning Ganga at Varanasi and re-developing the Ghats of the city, both authors are keen on contributing their expertise to the Clean Ganga initiative further. If there are any questions regarding the attached document, please do contact us for further clarifications. Thank you.
THE FIRST PRIORITY SHOULD BE CLEANING OF GANGA AND THEN COMES REDEVELOPMENT OF GHATS BECAUSE TOURIST COMING TO VARANASI AS RELIGIOUS VISIT GENERALLY BUT FINDING DIRTY WATER THEY ARE UNABLE TO DIP THEMSELF IN HOLY RIVER GANGA.GARBAGE COLLECTORS SHOULD BE ALLOCATED ON GHATS AND PUBLIC SHOULD BE GUIDED TO THROW WASTE IN SEPARATE STREAM WHOS WATER SHOLD BE TREATED AND THEN ALLOWED TO MIX WITH MAINSTREAM.
Road map for redeveloping Varanasi Ghats is enclosed as PDF file.
Cleaning Ganga is possible by cleaning minds of the people.Taking bath, washing clothes, utensils, sewage disposal from the nearby houses, garbage disposal by the travelers or residents and the funny thing is while doing all these they chant 'Har har gange'. I have been visiting ghats for weeks to see what kinds of pollutants are being added to it.I'm a student and have been provided with the task to check the status of adulterants by chemical exp.which we perform every week, its in worse condition.
The people has to be aware of the fact the importance of ganga in our country. Place like Varanasi is so important as a divine place specially for ganga so the awareness programm should relate this divine importance of ganga too it might hurt to the sentiment of people who pollute ganga and might stop it. and the industries should not be allowed to throw their waste. And where darins are meeting this river there should be cleaning plants. And also by developing the water transportation.
notification form Union & UP Govt.for delimitation of Ghat to 100 metres from bank. Only to be used for bathing. no offerings to Ganga . Exclusive places for Sadhus, hawkers after the delimitation zones. Notice boards 'Like Ganga'' 'no littering' and by order.Involve Corporates and allow them to spend on the cleaning project deductible under CSR through IT Act notification. Can coordinate activity if allowed to do so. Also remove existing refuse from the banks of Ganga. Identify a Pilot Ghat pl.
Well My last Post was on 02-09-2014 this is my last where I have done much study and read many things. The one which suited best for Redeveloping Ganga Ghats is being Shared with you. It may not be the final one..but can be a First Step where ever effort is counted..Don’t let 200 years but divide by 20 we can deliver in 10 years. All we need if every effort and support from people of Varanasi
Why not make separate man made ghats for cremation purpose, like a mid size pond or may be a canal, that is open for water to enter on one side while closed on the other. The water must be treated before it is left in the river again. And treating still water is more easy. On the other hand if water is still, people would not want to throw garbage in it easily as it is going to be visible all the time. Also make laws to avoid or educate people to cremate on actual ghats.
i have added details in my file about cleaning of varanasi city
Upstream and downstream of Varanasi where the Ghats end, series of new Ghats can be developed to decongest the existing Ghats. Architecture and façade of these new Ghats should have period look matching the old Ghats. At other places along the river bank walkways, cycle and skating tracks along with lush plantation can be developed as recreational centres. Large aquariums & dolphin parks could be developed as other attractions to promote tourism along with conveniently located hotels & motels.
