To generate awareness about the importance of the handloom industry and its contribution to the socio-economic development of the country, 7th August is celebrated every year as “National Handloom Day”.
August 7 was chosen as the National Handloom Day to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement which was launched on this day in 1905 in the Calcutta Town hall.
The first National Handloom Day was inaugurated on 7th August 2015 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the Centenary Hall of Madras University in Chennai.
Ministry of Textiles in collaboration with MyGov is organizing a Selfie with Indian Handloom contest where Indian citizens are requested to wear Indian Handloom and showcase their bonding with handlooms by sharing interesting selfies with Indian Handloom.
Gratification:
10 interesting entries will be displayed on the official website (https://handlooms.nic.in) of DC(Handlooms).
