India faces many natural hazards, including floods, cyclones, drought etc. But every hazard need not turn into a disaster. By careful planning, capacity building, early warning, community participation, procurement and pre-positioning of necessary equipment and resources, participation of civil society, assigning clear role to the private sector, involving panchayati raj institutions and urban local bodies, rigorous enforcement of techno-legal regime on land use and building regulations etc., significant reductions of losses can be brought about in such events. We have a national policy on disaster management, at http://ndmindia.nic.in/NPDM-101209.pdf

We have created a number of institutions by way of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, which may be seen at http://ndmindia.nic.in/acts-rules/DisasterManagementAct2005.pdf

What more can be done to enhance our preparedness to handle natural disasters?

NDMA should be revitalised with specialisation of disaster management capabilities and their location specified. Create separate fund pool for the same. Have a short and long term strategy. Visualise disaster or every kind. both conventional and un conventional.

CENSOR BOARDS of respective states should take initiative to create awareness of wearing SEAT BELT, by ELIMINATING MOVIE SCENES without wearing seat belt.

Please take it as serious issue, Movies can influence people a lot than any other ways of creating awareness. Also by advertising 'Wear a Seat Belt' before starting a movie along with 'No Smoking awareness Ad'

Risk mitigation and disaster preparedness is necessary but mindset about disaster should require to be changed. Most of the people in disaster prone zone like Govt. intervention and usually wait for relief. Instead of that if they may be prepared for self resilient methods it will be much effective. All the school and college children must be trained and aware about this preparedness. A habit of saving towards insurance of assets is another requirement to this direction.
