In the recently concluded Rio Olympics 2016, India sent its largest ever Olympic contingent comprising of 118 athletes. Despite the large number of athletes, the Indian contingent managed to bag only 2 medals in the Games viz., one Silver medal in Badminton and one Bronze medal in Wrestling. Considering the size of our country it can be said that the present performance was not up to the country’s potential. Views/suggestions are invited on what specific steps need to be taken to realise full sporting potential of India in forthcoming Olympics in 2020, 2024 and 2028.

We need to identify talent at the grass root level. Sports should be mandatory for school children and we should have in place a proper infrastructure like China to develop and hone their talent. To become a Professional sportsperson expert coaching/guidance is crucial. It requires significant financial investment, hence govt. should work with corporate org. to get that funding. Eg: OGQ. Complete overhaul of incompetent sports federations like HI, AIFF, Qualified Professnls should manage them.

I suggest very bright sport-persons should be selected from remote corner of the villages like from north-east, Uttrakhand, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, MP, Telangana etc. They should be provided best training/coaching on respective sports plus they should given education by affiliating school/college/university. And after international event they should be provided Government job such as sports teacher in school/college/University or in Railways/army etc., so that economic & educationally they are OK

Please do not make the mistake in sports like we have done in education "education for all" which has only resulted in mediocre skills. All the areas which require excellence requires great teachers, committed schooling system and good parenting . If you democratize sports more the result will be more disappointing. The current setup engineered by administrators must go.

Continued 2/2
Societal Failure - Sports is not given due importance by parents. Though kids play games on weekend, there is lack of venue for playing competitive games at early stages of the life of an athlete. Competitive games currently fall in the ambit of school and is usually restricted to a single day. Though school is one way to find talents, I believe there needs to be more venues. One way other countries deal with it is by organising competitions at village level.

Indian Olympic teams' performance was disappointing. This points to failure at two levels - administrative, societal.
Administrative Failure - I am shocked at the lack of governance and transparency in many of sports federations. For example, Athletic Federation of India(AFI) at its 2016 Annual General Meeting, reelected the same office bears as in 2012. No new talent mean sticking with the same failed policies. And on AFI's website, I could not find how they are spending their money.
