This Group has been constituted by the Department of Food and Public Distribution to engage the people and involve them in the initiatives being taken by the Department for bringing about improvement in its areas of operation. The Department mainly deals with formulation and implementation of policy relating to procurement, movement, storage and distribution of foodgrains; implementation of Targeted Public Distribution System (TPDS); maintaining storage facilities for keeping the central reserves of foodgrains and promotion of scientific storage; policy matters relating to sugar and sugarcane sector etc. Food Corporation of India (FCI) and Central Warehousing Corporation (CWC) are two agencies of the Department. Activities of the department are driven by the vision of ensuring food security to the people. Under the National Food Security Act, 2013, which came into effect from 5th July, 2013, the Central Government as well as the State Governments are legally bound to provide highly subsidised foodgrains to the entitled beneficiaries under the TPDS. NFSA has made it obligatory for the State Governments to ensure the actual delivery or supply of the foodgrains to the entitled persons at subsidised rates. The citizens, social groups and society in general can use this platform to draw attention to deficiencies in the system and make suggestions to bring about systemic improvements. The ideas and suggestions received would be used as inputs for improving the existing policy initiatives to meet the overall objective of food security for all.
